What is NEUROMUSCULAR THERAPY ?

NMT is a technique applied to soft tissues of the body to deactivate tender points called Trigger Points(TrPs) found in muscles and connective tissue. Trigger points develop as result of trauma, poor posture, repetitive overuse, or fatigued muscles. This procedure works well for post-cancer patients as well.

TrP may be described as a "
focus of hyperirritability in tissue when compressed and demonstrates hypersensitivity".

TrPs not only cause pain but may also cause referred pain. For example, pain in the neck may actually arise from TrPs in the shoulder area. TrPs may elicit pain by being compressed or they may radiate pain without pressure. Muscles in the immediate area of the TrP often feel tight and "knotty".

Since sensory, motor, and autonomic phenomena may be stimulated by active trigger points the results may also include pain, tenderness, spasm, blanching, coldness, sweating, goose bumps, vasodilation, and hypersecretions. Other symptoms may also include numbness, tingling, burning sensation, skin coldness, and other similar manifestations. Active trigger points are always tender, prevent full lengthening of the muscle, weakening of the muscle, and refer pain to other parts of the body upon compression.

NMT therefore is a common generic designation for trigger point therapy based on the pioneer in the USA, Janet Travell, M.D., who was the White House physician to Presidents Jack Kennedy and L.B.Johnson in the 1960s.

Neuromuscular therapy uses superficial palpation before proceeding to deeper tissues to identify tender zones on the body that may be causing the discomfort you are experiencing. This modality includes trigger point techniques combined with other massage methods to release entrapped nerves from muscle impingement. Spastic muscles can affect underlying nerves which may trigger impulses to muscles thus causing undue pain. With properly applied techniques, the therapist can determine the appropriate treatment for each patient. When muscles become compressed they cause the blood supply to be diminished bringing about an accumulation of toxic wastes which in turn irritate muscles. This results in the discomfort or pain one experiences. As muscles become fatigued their ability to maintain bone alignment is weakened. Neuromuscular therapy provides the needed modifications in dysfunctional tissues to restore functional normality and balance.

Neuromuscular efficiency takes into account the global actions of muscles as a whole and any reduced efficiency or retardation will increase the risk of injury to muscles such as strains and sprains.

Proprioception is the forerunner of proper balance and function for muscles. Any disturbance to these sensory structures increases the risk to injury and the formation of trigger points.

Neuromuscular practitioners focus on ischemia, trigger points, nerve entrapments\compressions, postural balance, nutritional components, and emotional factors of the patient. The interaction of biochemical, biochemical, and psychological factors together bring about body changes, rarely does one alone. Any of these that lie outside of the scope of the practitioner will be cause for referral.

Myoskeletal Therapy and Joint Mobilization are other important applications in completing the therapeutic process. Medical Massage, like the modalities above, is for physician prescribed conditions, but patients may refer themselves to a therapist for evaluation; these are very specific and very effective clinical modalities.

Manual-applied therapy can be a logical treatment for you and it is very cost effective. Body maintenance is extremely important to one's well-being, just as good care is to an automobile for proper performance. In the final analysis the choice is really YOURS!

                 The Origin of Trigger Points

Persons who perform repetitive tasks that are stressful, such as working at a computer, working over a desk, athletes, driving/sitting in  a car for long hours, carrying a heavy purse or a briefcase, carrying a child on the arm, poor posture, all of these are some examples of muscle overload that lead to trigger points. Indirect causes may be arthritic joints, emotional distress, some visceral diseases may also produce trigger points.

Your Immune System and Medical Massage

Benefits of Medical Massage for Building a Strong Immune System

Your immune system truly defends and protects your body from an environment laden with threatening forms of
bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms, as well as other inherent dangerous forms of disease.

So how does massage help your immune system? Massage therapy boosts immune system by stimulating certain types of white blood cells. Since therapeutic massage decreases cortisol that destroys natural killer cells, your immune system gets a boost. An increase in white blood cells and natural killer-cell activity better prepares the body to fight off possible invading disease causing cells. Massage even boosts immunity in those people with
severely compromised immune system, such as breast-cancer patients
.

In a study conducted  at the University of Miami on women who had been diagnosed  with breast cancer,  the women received regular massage therapy (three times a week for five weeks), with 80 percent showing improved immune function. So give your immune system some help with regular massage sessions! Call us soon to schedule your next appointment.              (972) 788-5051.
